Sam and Smokey, NSW 2005
Obituary

My father Sam Haskins (Samuel Joseph Haskins) was born on November 11, 1926, in Kroonstad , Orange Free State, South Africa.

He married Alida Elzabe Van Heerden.  They had two children of their own Ludwig Haskins (aka Ludi Haskins) and Konrad Haskins (aka Kondi Haskins.)  They also adopted a daughter, Heidi Haskins who died as an infant.

Sam died November 26, 2009 in Bowral, New South Wales, Australia.  His death came a month after he suffered a stroke in New York City. Untreated depression is the leading cause of suicide.  Tragically Sam is another example of this, please treat depression with your loved ones especially following a stroke.

He is survived by his wife Alida, his two sons Konrad "Kondi" Haskins and Ludwig "Ludi" Haskins and his dog Smoky.

A very detailed biography can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Haskins

I am deeply saddened that for over three months after my fathers passing my mother and brother have not put up an official memorial or obituary.  This inability to deal with death may explain why the memory of my sister is omitted from the official biography.  Then after the obituary was posted to the blog a flurry of posts followed to bury it off the front page.  The official www.Haskins.com website still gives the impression that Sam is alive and makes no mention of his passing.  I wish my family well and sincerely hope they get the therapy they so badly need.

God Bless.

A Few Words

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
that we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone.
Wear no forced air of ...solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without affect,
without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolutely unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you,
for an interval,

somewhere very near,

just around the corner.
All is well.
